Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to learn how to surf?

Most of our students are standing and riding waves the first day. For some, it may take a few days. After learning to stand, students will learn to catch waves and perform maneuvers, as well as safety and etiquette.

What if I've never surfed before?

Our camps are designed for beginners. No one will be left behind. With our 1:4 instructor/student ratio, everyone receives individual attention.

Can you guarantee that I will be able to surf?

Learning to catch waves can take a while, but you will learn to stand up and ride a wave. If not, we'll happily refund your money.

How much time is spent in the water each day?

Our campers spend at least two-thirds of each camp day surfing. Surf conditions and student stamina are also factors. No students have complained about not getting enough surf time, but campers occasionally ask for a break. We provide shelter and games on the beach.

Where do we meet for camp?

In Virginia Beach, check-in takes place on the boardwalk at 4th Street. In Weekapaug, we meet in the parking lot at Fenway.

What do we bring to camp?

Surfboards and wetsuits are provided, but you may bring your own. You will need a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, and snack.

What are your age requirements?

Surf lessons are for all ages, as are the afternoon mini-camps at Gilgo Beach. For all other surf camps, students must be between 7-17 years old.

Is camp ever cancelled?

Rain won't stop us, but in the event of extreme weather or dangerous surf, camp will be cancelled. If one day of camp is cancelled, there will be no refunds. If more than one day is cancelled, we will provide make-up days or issue a prorated refund.

What is the withdrawal policy?

A camper may withdraw at least one week prior to camp and receive a full refund minus a $50 processing fee. Within one week of camp no refunds will be issued.

How many instructors are at camp?

Regardless of the size of camp, we will maintain an instructor/student ratio of 1:4.

Are there lifeguards on duty?

Lifeguards are on duty during camp.
